First Study to Show Rice Protein as Good as Whey in Athletes

Despite many negative perceptions to plant-based proteins, for the first time ever, a randomized, double-blind study conducted at the University of Tampa showed that rice protein supplementation was as effective as whey protein for building muscle mass in a group of male athletes.

What are the study details?

A group of 24 resistance-trained males were randomly selected and blinded to receive either Growing Naturals’ rice protein versus a commercial whey protein supplement. Supplements were matched for protein, calories and carbs.

The athletes were instructed to complete a robust & supervised exercise regime 3-4 times a week for 8 weeks and to consume their protein supplement within an hour after their workout. The subjects also consumed a controlled healthy diet consisting of 25% protein, 50% carbs and 25% fat.

Measurements for power, strength and body composition were taken at baseline and after 8 weeks. Results showed that athletes in both protein groups had significant gains in lean body mass with some minor decreases in body fat as well as significant gains in whole body strength and power. According to the researcher, whey protein did not confer additional or superior benefits compared to rice protein.

The study was published in 2013 in the Nutrition Journal.
